A THURROCK councillor has been shortlisted for a top national award.
Cllr Yash Gupta (Grays Thurrock ward), is on the shortlist for the first LGiU and CCLA Cllr 10 Achievement Award organised by the Local Government information Unit.
The awards will be held at the end of the Cllr 10 conference at the home of Arsenal, the Emirates Stadium in London on 4 February. It is the first ever major national conference specifically for councillors, which will hear from speakers including the Rt Hon John Denham MP, Caroline Spelman MP, Julia Goldsworthy MP.
Cllr Gupta is one of five councillors shortlisted in the Community Champion category. At the end of the conference, the overall winner of the Councillor of the Year award will be announced from among the category winners.
“It is a great honour for any councillor to be nominated, let alone being shortlisted for these awards,” said Cllr Gupta this week.
“There are 24,000 district, county and borough councillors across the country and around 80,000 parish councillors. To be shortlisted from all of these councillors is a miracle for me.”
Cllr Gupta, who was first elected to Thurrock council in 1996, was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours of 2006 for his services to the local community. In 2008 he was presented with a Glory of India Award. again for his work with the local communities on community cohesion and community well-being.
Cllr Gupta says he would like to thank all those colleagues In the council and the community and voluntary sector who sent in his nominations for this great honour.
