Tilbury welcomed Redbridge FC to Chadfield’s on Saturday. The last encounter against these two sides back in September 2009 saw the Dockers grab two late goals in the last 5 minutes to level the score 2-2.
A late pitch inspection on saturday morning declared the game on, recent poor weather put the game in doubt, the Tilbury Ground staff led by Steve Taylor doing a sterling job to ensure the pitch was in good condition in time for kick off at 3pm.
This was the Dockers first game at Chadfield’s in 2010 and manager Graham Chester making a few changes to his starting 11 that faced East Thurrock United two weeks previous.
In came new signing Paul Shave from AFC Hornchurch, Chris Stowe gets the nod to start upfront alongside Joel Barnett. Donny Barnard is dropped to the subs bench alongside strong contenders Manlee Brown, Nathan Gordon, Chris Taylor and stand-in keeper Andy Gibbs.
The game got underway and it was the Dockers who showed their intentions first after 3 minutes, Joel Barnett’s effort just sneaking past the back post, however, it was Redbridge who scored first, the ball knocked down on the edge of the Tilbury box saw Andy Edmunds smash the ball into the top corner of the net to give the visitors the lead after only 5 minutes.
16 minutes gone and from a set piece Redbridge came close to extending their lead, Tommy Laxton’s cracking effort from 14 yards out looked goal bound but luckily for the Dockers the ball smashed off the back of Redbridge defender Alf Dickinson and out for a goal kick, lucky escape for the Dockers.
Jamie Wallace collected the ball from just inside his own half and heads towards the Redbridge goal, with Joel Barnett tearing off to his right and Chris Stowe to his left opens up the defence as Wallace decides to go solo, skips past the sliding challenge of George Alder, then unleashes a fine effort which Redbridge keeper James Marrable deals with comfortably.
24th minute and Joel Barnett in determined mood sets off down the right, the industrious youngster almost to the edge of the Redbridge box dummies a defender to his right and finds a yard of space, Barnett hitting the ball with venom, an almost certain goal, when a Redbridge defender courageously blocks the ball off the line with his chest, allowing Redbridge to keep their lead at 1-0.
26 minutes gone and Bradley Barnes and Joe Keith combing well down the left, Barnes slides the ball into the path of Keith almost to the by-line, Keith pulls the ball back and with his left foot sends the ball high across goal onto the head of Paul Shave whose effort is blocked by the keeper.
Tilbury continue to put pressure on the Redbridge defence, Joe Keith with the ball on the half way line, spots Joel Barnett making his move down the right, Barnett with the ball at his feet attacks the Redbridge goal, and almost to the edge of the area whips the ball in with pace, across the face of the goal, Chris Stowe sliding in at the back post but fails to connect with the ball as it races out of play for a goal kick.
Second half and the Dockers start the second period as they finished the first. A quickly taken free kick by Joe Keith to the feet of Bradley Barnes, Barnes sending in a fine ball across goal and on to the head of Christian Wheeler, who nods inches past the post.
First substitute for the Dockers, Chris Stowe off for Donny Barnard.
54th minute and the Dockers get a well earned equaliser, starting from Paul Shave’s towering presence in the middle of the park. Shave winning a header nods the ball down and into the path of Joel Barnett who sets off towards the Redbridge goal, Barnett spotting Jamie Wallace tearing down the right, places the ball into the path of the Tilbury Skipper who stays composed as he picks his spot to place the ball into the net, 1-1.
Halfway through the second period and the Dockers hit the Redbridge defence in waves, the home side having most of the possession and looking the more hungry for the win then their visitors.
Another Tilbury set piece, whipped in by Joe Keith on to the head of Rickie Hayles, Redbridge keeper does well to absorb the ball into his chest.
Second Tilbury substitute, Manlee Brown on for Bradley Barnes.
The Dockers continue to charge at the Redbridge defence, however, Redbridge look dangerous when they do break into the Tilbury half, that said the Dockers rear guard of Daniel Smith, Glen Golby, Rickie Hayles and Joe Keith all working well as a unit and looking solid as ever.
77th minute and Tilbury made their third substitute, Chris Taylor on for Joel Barnett.
78th minute and Tilbury get the goal they deserve, a magic moment by Joe Keith as he sets off towards goal, beats off heavy challenges almost to the by line as he whips in a left footed pass across goal and from the near post on to the head of Chris Taylor with his first touch of the game to score, 2-1 to Tilbury.
As the Dockers protect the lead and the clocks ticks down, one moments of madness sees the impressive Paul Shave kick out in the 90th minute after a heavy challenge from behind, match official Mr. Ben Wright having no other choice but to give Shave a red card.
After 4 minutes of injury time played, the Dockers get their first win and 3-points in 2010.
A delighted Tilbury Manager Graham Chester said after the game “We deserved that result, we battled and were patient, and we took our chances when it mattered. I am pleased to get back to winning ways. I thought Paul Shave was excellent today, he gives us the presence in the middle of the park that we were lacking. A silly rush of blood in the 90th minute, I hope people don’t judge him too quickly over on mistake”
