Saffron Walden 6 v 53 Thurrock

In Thurrock’s penultimate league game, the champions posted 50+ points for the seventh time this season. Two late call offs in the back row meant that visitors performance in the first quarter of the match was very disjointed despite an early well worked try by Darryl Worster, two long range penalties from Tom Hughes put the home side in front, and it could have been worse has a third effort was scuffed short and wide. Slowly Thurrock regained their composure and stopped giving away penalties and started to play in much more cohesive manner and regained the lead with a try from the forwards, No 8 Luke Crowhurst controlled the ball at the base of the scrum and touched down for a push over try, converted by Aaron Burns. Another try wide out just before the break from Sam Porter see the visitors turn around 17-6 up.

The fight shown early on by the home side petered out as Thurrock’s strong running backs and forwards began to take control, and the second half was one side affair with the visitors racking up 36 points in what was a very entertaining half for the Thurrock supporters who outnumbered the home support by three to one. Aaron Burns kicked an early penalty then the floodgates opened Darryl Worster added is second, and Sam Porter last season top try scorer returned to form with a further two tries to complete his hat trick. Andy Kettleton scored a fine support try after a fantastic run from Stefan North he was on hand to finish it off from a couple of yards, and Ben Stanley the added late try, Burns added 4 further conversions to complete the scoring.
