YOU may wonder why YourThurrock is 27 miles away interviewing the Conservative candidate for Harlow, Robert Halfon. Well, reporter Michael Casey was visiting his mother over there. Coming off the M11 he was caught by the sight of the Tory candidate holding his own placard on a busy stretch of the A414.
Being a sucker for “out of the box” campaigning and aware that this seat is held by Labour with a slim 97 majority, we parked the car and asked Robert a few questions. His campaign has attracted a lot of attention. Indeed, BBC East were there at the same time.
This is Robert’s third attempt to become an MP and he has been the embodiment of the “opening of an envelope” campaigner. Not only on the doorstep but also on the internet. A lot cold be learnt from his campaign.
Are the people of Harlow impressed.
Paul Aylott, 49, said: ” Robert stands for cutting back on waste in the NHS, police and schools plus the idea that benefits should not be paid out without giving something back.”
Grace Sadler, 21 said: “I heard him talking about Harlow money for Harlow housing. I am a first time voter and myself and my daughter Millie are waiting for a house. I shall certainly think about this come May 6th.”
