Rogue Traders Con Pensioner of Cash

Police are advising residents to be wary of rogue traders after an 81-year-old woman from Aveley was conned out of £600.

The victim made contact with a man, claiming to be from a gardening company, after she received a flyer through her letterbox. Three men turned up on Monday, May 17, and carried out some minimal garden work. They then asked for money and drove the woman to two cash machines, asking her to draw out £600 in total. They then dropped her home, took their business flyer from her and left without completing the garden work.

Sgt Marc Jordan, of the South Ockendon neighbourhood policing team, said: “Thankfully, they didn’t use any force to get the cash, but these callous men have clearly preyed on the vulnerability of this woman, and we want to make sure this doesn’t happen to any other residents.

“If you are unsure about the validity of a business, contact consumer direct. If you see anyone behaving suspiciously in your area or are concerned for vulnerable neighbours, please contact us.”
