Healthy Dinners From Council Rewarded

Thurrock Council’s schools catering service has been awarded a Bronze Catering Mark from Food for Life — one of only six in the country.

The service is responsible for school meals at 40 of the borough’s primary schools, three secondary schools, two special schools and two nurseries.

The Mark shows that Thurrock provides quality and healthy food for the young people.

For example, hydrogenated fat has been removed from all menus, they are also free from the prescribed additives and flavourings. Three-quarters of the menu range is freshly prepared using basic, unprocessed ingredients.

Children who eat school meals from the council’s catering service also know the meat is at least “farm assured”, all eggs are free-range and no genetically modified ingredients are used.

In addition, all the menus use seasonal fruit and vegetables.

It will be aiming for the Silver Mark next with half the items sourced locally.
