IT SEEMS to be a week in which Thurrock appears near the top of a number of unenviable lists. Earlier this week we revealed that Thurrock had the third highest number of bankruptcies. Today, it has been revealed that Thurrock father’s owe the third highest amount of child maintenance in the country.

The survey shows that Thurrock dads owe a whopping £10.2 million in unpaid maintenance. Only Grimsby, Milton Keynes and Blackpool owe a higher amount with £11 milion, £10.5 and £10.3 respectively.

As of March 2010, £3.7billion was owed nationally in child maintenance arrears. Of this sum, about £1billion has been judged to be collectable.

The new plan from the coalition government is to cut the benefits of those dads who owe money and won’t get back into work.

Full report and interviews to follow.
