Don’t Miss Tax Credit Deadline Urges CAB

The local CAB in Thurrock is issuing an urgent reminder to all people who have received tax credits over the last year that the deadline to fill out the forms is Saturday 31st July 2010.

Families who have received tax credit payments in the last tax year will have received papers from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) between April and July.

The local charity is warning that it’s vitally important that everyone who’s had payments above £10 a week over the last financial year fill out these forms – even if they have since stopped or expect them to stop soon. If they don’t complete the forms, any money received from 6 April 2010 will need to be repaid.

Mike Rawlings, manager at Thurrock CAB said: “Every year around 200,000 families end up with overpayments as a result of not completing their end of year
forms. Whether you will be continuing to claim tax credits after July, or have claimed them over the last year, but won’t be claiming any more, it’s absolutely vital you complete these forms. Otherwise you may be asked to pay back any money you have received since April 2010.

“Forms can be completed over the phone, or posted. If you have any problems filling out the forms you can come and see us for advice at our centre in Grays High Street or various Children’s Centres, Libraries or GP surgeries around Thurrock, or call us on: 0844 826 9689”

Citizens Advice top tips for people who receive Tax Credits are:

Review your annual pack as soon as you get it – even if you are no longer getting any money.

Fill in your forms carefully and post them – or call the helpline and complete them over the phone.

Act before the deadline to help avoid an overpayment.

Act quickly to ensure you’re getting the right amount.

The bureau, a local charity, has advice sessions in Grays, Chadwell St Mary, Tilbury, Stanford le Hope, South Ockendon, Surestart Centres and GPs surgeries throughout Thurrock.
