FORMER William Edwards student Jo Wilkinson grabbed a team bronze for the Marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona yesterday despite running the last ten miles with a serious leg injury!
Bedford AC’s Jo, whose parents still live in Blackshots, picked up the injury at the 16 mile mark but showed true grit in finishing in 2:44:11.
Jo later appeared in front of the BBC cameras on crutches as she explained what happened. She said: “It really hurt after 16 miles but I wasn’t going to quit. I went into automatic and finished the race.
Up at the front, Lithuanian Zivile Balciunaite stayed clear in the closing stages for a first-ever women’s gold for her country in 2-31-14.
Jo’s England vest still adorns the Main Hall at her alma mater at William Edwards.
