England leave from Tilbury for Ashes tour: 1932

IN the week that Andrew Strauss’ team leave for Australia to hopefully come back with the Ashes for the first time since 1987, we thought we would show footage of how the team used to make their way down under.

Members of the English cricket team leave from the deck of the liner ‘Orontes’ in Tilbury docks. They shake hands with the captain of the ship. They are introduced to the captain (among the audible names are Leyland and Harold Larwood, Duckworth, Brown, Allen, Mitchell, Painter, Powell.

One of the team or personnel speaks to the newsreels – thanking everyone for the warm send off. He hopes they will return with the Ashes.

"BRING THOSE ASHES BACK PLEASE?"
