Police warning after attempt car theft while owner de-iced car

POLICE are reminding Thurrock residents to be extra vigilant while de-icing vehicles after a thief tried to steal a car in Aveley this morning (Wednesday, December 1).

The victim was de-icing a peugeot while in Manning Street at 6.45am. At that time a suspect got into drivers seat and drove away but crashed causing £500 worth of damage to the bumper before running away.

The man is described as unshaven, aged between 21 and 40 years old and of middle eastern appearance.

Ockendon Insp Richard Baxter said: “We all know that the easiest way to de-ice cars is to leave engines on to let the car warm up, but unfortunately this leaves the ourselves open to having the car stolen by an opportunist thief who maybe close by.

“We want to advise you to stay with your vehicle all the time while warming the vehicle up and if you do need to pop back into the house take the keys with you and lock the car.

“This maybe an inconvienience but having your car stolen is a much bigger inconvenience.”
