Safety checks carried out on licensed taxis have led to five vehicles being suspended.
The unannounced operation by Thurrock Council licensing officers and VOSA inspected 51 vehicles. As well as the five immediate suspensions ordered for serious defects, a further 16 vehicles were given notices to repair other less serious defects.
Thurrock Council’s Chair of Public Protection, Councillor Wendy Curtis said: “These checks are part of our continued commitment to ensuring that licensed taxis are safe for the people of Thurrock. We would also like to remind people they should only ever use licensed taxis – it is easy to forget, especially late at night when you want to get home.”
There are two kinds of licensed taxis – the first are Hackney Carriages and in Thurrock have yellow stickers and yellow license plates. They can be hailed in the street or be hired from a taxi rank and must use a meter for any journey. Private hire vehicles have green stickers and plates and they must be pre-booked and cannot be hailed on the street.
All licensed drivers must display a badge which shows their photograph and number.
