Max suffered from a congenital heart condition. His condition worsened when he was fourteen. By the age of 27, he needed a transplant.

Max travelled to the Freeman hospital in Newcastle where he spent three months waiting for the operation. Whilst there, he composed a journal.

After the operation, he published the letters into a book called: “A Change of Heart”.
