Patients benefit from shopping voucher scheme

Young patients will benefit from kind shoppers who donate their Tesco and Sainsbury’s vouchers to Basildon University Hospital.

In past years, tens of thousands of vouchers have been collected and used to get equipment for the hospital school room, playroom and for children on the wards.

Veronica Buttigieg, Hospital School Teacher, said: “Last year we received thousands of vouchers, thanks to the hard work and generosity of hospital volunteer, Brian Jiggens, who collected in excess of 70,000 Tesco vouchers for us, and many members of the public who sent their vouchers in to us. We were able to buy new laptops for the children and lots of arts and crafts materials, such as paper, clay and fabrics. We also got educational books, computer programmes and musical instruments. The work of the hospital school helps to take our patients’ minds off their health problems, have some fun and keep up their education while in hospital.”

There are donation boxes in the Main Reception, Outpatients Department, and in the entrance to the Maternity Unit. Alternatively, you can post your vouchers to Veronica Buttigieg, The Hospital School Room, Children’s Wards, Basildon University Hospital, Nethermayne, Basildon, Essex SS16 5NL.
