Thurrock 3 Weston-S-Mare 0
Blue Square Bet South
Bill Robinson reports from Ship Lane…….
With games running out it was another important game here this afternoon for Thurrock’s survival, and thanks to new arrival Lee Boylan and his splendid hat-trick of goals, which could have been more three points where secured.
The first half was mainly a midfield battle, neither side gaining any advantage or creating much in the way of goal threats, which restricted both sides to long range efforts on goal, Craig Pope and Matt Bodkin both trying but without causing the keeper much concern
The opening goal came in the 34th minute from a Joao Carlos corner, the ball went deep into the box where debutant Lee Boylan rose unmarked in the centre of the box to head a firm header into the back of the net.
Within 60 seconds Boylan had a great chance to add to his and Thurrock’s score with a shot from 18 yards that went just over.
On the stroke of half time Weston were awarded a penalty when in a goal mouth scramble Craig Pope to brought down Dayle Grubb, the referee had no doubt in pointing the spot. Marcus Duharty took the kick, hitting a softest shot to keeper Joe Woolley’s right enabling Woolley to make a fine save to keep Thurrock’s advantage at the interval.
HT 1-0
With only six minutes of the second period gone Thurrock extended their lead, once again Lee Boylan was on target with the goal, a long ball out of defence was headed on and Boylan was first to react and lobbed the ball over tha advancing keeper and into the net.
His third goal came in the 75th minute, an attack down the right flank looked dangerous as Matt Bodkins cross came over, it was headed back and forth until it dropped nicely for Boylan to rush forward and head home number three.
The game was won and Thurrock never looked to be in trouble the few chances Weston created where wide of the mark and never troubled Woolley.
Boylan did have the chance to increase his goal tally on two other occasions but was off target on both occasions.
