OF the 3,000 filmed items that YT has made in just under three years, one of the most poignant was the funeral of Lance-Corporal Nicky Mason in Aveley in September 2008.
Lance Corporal Nicky Mason, of the 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan on 13 September, 2008.
The 26-year-old was on a routine patrol near Kajaki in the Helmand province at the time. He was sweeping a piece of high ground near the crucial Kajaki Dam when an explosive device detonated.
Three years later comes the news that Osama Bin Laden has been killed by US forces in Pakistan.
The memory of Nicky remains deep in the heart of his parents, Linda and Dennis and brothers and sisters Lee, Francine, Victoria and Jodie.
People saw Nicky as a hero then and on this day, when the leader of Al-Qaeda has been killed, he remains a hero now.
It is to their credit that the people of Aveley have always kept the memory of Nicky alive. Even this morning, the memorial on the High Street has the flag flying high and Nicky’s memorial plaque in the corner.
On this momentous day, take a moment to think about Nicky and what he sacrificed.
