Result: Writtle won by 5 Wickets
Highlights: For Orsett: Kirk Laws 115 Not Out. For Writtle: J Reynolds 100 Not Out
Orsett 2nd Team entertained Writtle 2nd team at the Recreation Ground on a blustery Saturday afternoon. This 45 over friendly turned out to be enjoyable, but with a close defeat for Orsett. Orsett batted first and with openers Dave Carter (28) and Ben Smith (21) putting on 42 runs for the 1st wicket. Kirk Laws who the week previously faced Graham Napier’s pace at Colchester came to the crease one wicket down and played superbly for 115 Not Out with other helpful contributions from Paul Boreham (17) and Nathan Smith (21). After 45 overs Orsett posted 221 for the loss of 4 wickets. The pick of the Writtle bowlers being Hackcell with 2-36. In reply Writtle started slowly with good bowling from James Page (0-16), New Aussie recruit Columban Walsh (2-50) and Captain John Morris (2-36) but J Reynolds with 100 Not Out (dropped 5 times) with the aid of L Batchford (34) and P Fenton (41) saw Writtle Home in the last over. The fielding from Orsett was not of the required standard so Writtle won a fun, enjoyable and close contest. The intention at the outset from both captains was to give everyone a game and that was achieved, which means Orsett players go into the League Season next Saturday with valuable match practice.

The emphasis this season for the Orsett U11 management team was to get additional high quality friendly fixtures so the youngsters can test themselves outside the local league, which in turn will aid their development and improve technique and skills against stronger opposition. Hutton U11 fielded a very strong side and had two U12 players in their line-up. Orsett batted 1st and posted 233 for 6 wickets off their 20 overs with every batsman playing straight and looking technically correct against good quality Hutton bowling. Orsett then bowled well, but Hutton were too strong on the day posting 292 for 3 wickets off their 20 overs. Highlight in the field being Carl Rice’s Direct Throw to run out a Hutton batsman. The game was played in good spirit and a high standard and most of all every player enjoyed the experience and continues to improve their own performance.
