The Leader of Thurrock Council, Cllr John Kent, has written to Cory Environmental describing their plans to extend tipping at Mucking as “unacceptable”.
In his letter, Cllr Kent explains the Cory’s plans to keep tipping and increase the number of lorry movements will be formally considered by the council’s planning committee in June. The committee acts as consultees to the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation, which will make the planning decisions.
Cllr Kent explained that, as leader he does not involve himself in planning applications – but added: “I did want to make my views known to you directly.”
He wrote: “I feel compelled to write to you directly to express my personal deep concern over the potential expansion of both the number of lorry movements and the time period of the operation.”
The letter continues: “I believe it is unacceptable for the residents of East Tilbury to suffer the proposed huge increase in the number of lorry movements. Those people and thousands of other local residents have put up with the Landfill site for more than long enough and it is time the site was transformed into the long promised Riverside Nature Park.
“As you are aware, the Council has previously objected to such increases in activity and time periods and this will no doubt be an issue that will be in Members minds when they deliberate the current application.”
