Sickening assault near colleges leaves teen with brain injuries

DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses to a vicious assault last Saturday, May 14 when an unprovoked attack took place in a field located between Palmer’s and the Thurrock campus of South Essex College in Woodview, Grays.

At approximately 1.25am a large group of young men, white and aged about 19-20 years old, chased after the young victim and his friends and caught the 17 year old lad who was then attacked with weapons, including wooden bats, and was knocked unconscious. The victim’s friends managed to escape and call police.

The victim, with a serious head injury, was treated by paramedics and taken to Basildon Hospital where he was treated for a bleed on his brain and other injuries. He was later transferred to Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford where he has undergone an operation on his broken jaw and fractured wrist.

Dc Carla Hillyer said: “This was a nasty attack, the suspects left the victim not knowing if he was alive or dead and there is no apparent motive to this attack. The victim is only 17 years old and his parents are extremely worried and they urge anyone with information to come forward.”

If anyone has any information please contact Dc Hillyer at the Serious Crime team at South Ockendon Police Station on 0300 333 4444. Or alternatively contact Crimestoppers with any information, which can be given anonymously
