Thurrock Hockey Club’s new clubhouse will have not one but two pieces of silverware on display for the start of next season.
First team captain Steve Abbott received the loudest cheer of the day when he was presented with the Division 3SE cup, while seconds skipper Keith Mager lifted the Division 6SE cup to make the East Region Hockey Association annual presentation day on Sunday one to remember for the Palmer’s College based club.
For the men to win the Division 3SE title was no mean feat. They will now be playing against a far greater range of teams, and look forward to trips to the likes of Luton Town, West Herts, Stevenage and Sudbury amongst others.
The seconds are promoted to Division 5SE, where old foes Brentwood and Maldon & Little Baddow will be hoping to exact their revenge, and the likes of Harlow 1s and Southend 2s should provide very stiff competition.
The coming season could be one of the most important for over a decade. Both of the promoted teams will be fighting to stay up in their new divisions, while the thirds will be hoping that they can get their second promotion in three seasons.
The club will be fielding an Academy side in Division 9SE, full of youngsters who have progressed through from the successful Minis section of the club. This club is definitely on the up, with new teams, new facilities and a fine sponsor in Millane Construction. Outgoing men’s club captain Andy Sargeant, and head coach Andre Rudder have helped build a very good group of players, with a great bond and a strong team ethic.
The Ladies also have a big season ahead of them, after two of the three sides were relegated last season they will be out to prove that they can rebuild as the men have in the last few years. The Ladies are working hard in the Summer League and will be ready to hit hard come September.
