Search for legal eagles

THURROCK Council is on the lookout for some eager legal eagles seeking experience through the summer.

Over the past five years, Thurrock has managed to help a dozen young people through internships.

David Lawson, the council’s acting Deputy Head of Legal, said: “We are happy to offer a three-month internship for volunteers who have finished their law degree, but haven’t yet found a training placement.

“This is a chance for you to learn, hands-on, about some of the work we do — from planning to criminal law, and many other areas too many to mention.”

He added: “We have a long-established training programme which so far has always led to employment opportunities for those who take part, whether it is here in Thurrock or elsewhere.

“We are offering the experience you need to find a job.”

Thurrock’s legal department has close links with many other authorities across East Anglia, the Home Counties and east London.

Kar-Yee Chan, who volunteered at Thurrock Council for work experience over the Christmas period in 2004, returned after graduating from the University of Reading in July 2005,

She said: “I joined Thurrock in the September and left in August 2007 to go to Law School. I then started my training contract as a trainee solicitor at Thurrock in January 2008 and qualified as a solicitor in early 2011.

“Throughout my time as an intern at Thurrock I gained hands-on experience from the very first day and was exposed to a whole range of interesting work, both contentious and non-contentious.

“I was also able to attend meetings with clients and court hearings which gave me an insight into what it’s like to be an in-house local government solicitor. Everyone here, from principals to secretaries, is very friendly and I never felt afraid to ask any questions, no matter how silly they seemed!”

Urenna Nwulu volunteers at the council, undertaking an array of work from planning law to civil litigation, while studying part-time at law school and is currently taking her final exams.

Sabrina Sangha, Contracts Solicitor, was runner up to the winner of the Local Government Young Solicitor of the Year Award.
