Gladys hangs up her apron after 39 years

THOUSANDS of Thurrock people have eaten Gladys Wise’s cooking over the past few decades — but her time is coming to an end!

For the last 39 years Gladys has cooked school meals in the borough, but now — approaching 73 — she is preparing to hang up her apron for the last time at the end of term.

In fact Gladys has already retired once, aged 65, but she missed things so much she returned to work.

“It’s not the cooking, I really love doing that,” she said, “but it’s the paperwork that’s got to me. I just don’t want to do that any more.”

She started working in the kitchens of Stifford Clays school then spent 16 years at William Edwards and 15 years at the old Treetops in Dell Road, Grays.

Gladys was one of several Thurrock school catering service staff who were celebrating at the Havering and Thurrock Catering Services award night.

She won the Service Ambassador Winner for Thurrock, award.

Other winners were: Jayne Darlow, Thurrock Area Manager, Customer and Client Satisfaction; Janice Burdett, Operational Excellence Winner; Christine Cox, Market Leadership Winner; Tudor Court Primary School, Financial Performance Winners; and Amanda Milligan, Training and Development; Nicky Darnell, Service Excellence.
