Athletics: Thurrock finish second in Southern League

THURROCK finished second behind league winners Watford who had consistenly fielded the largest team all season.

Thurrock relied on regular athletes and its dominance on the field.

Nancy Le Beau finished second behind multi-event specialist Tanya Spurling from West Suffolk all season and had to settle for that position with a jump of 5.04m.

Sister Natalie won the B string with 4.78m and then went on to win the A string high jump with 1.55m with Lucy Howes winning the B with 1.50m.

Thrower Sue Lawrence picked up a trio of second places in the A string hammer, discus and javelin before winning the shot. And U17 athlete Amelia Sumun has contested the pole vault all season gaining many valuable points as well as in the 100m hurdles where she has shown great potential despite having another year over the 80m hurdles.

Another U17 Rebecca Barnard has gained valuable points in the 400m hurdles and 100m hurdles.

Final Result: 1st Watford 165; 2nd Thurrock Harriers 159; 3rd Ryston Runners 152; 4th West Suffolk 150; 5th Cambridge 117; 6th Highgate 87.
