Witness appeal after attempted armed robbery in South Ockendon

DETECTIVES have appealed for information after an attempted armed robbery at a shop in South Ockendon.

The incident happened at The Local in Daiglen Drive at about 5.30pm on Monday November 7, 2011.

A man walked into the shop and demanded money from the till, showing a shop assistant that he had a handgun tucked in his trousers.

When an alarm was set off inside the shop the man ran off empty handed. He fled in the direction of the Lidl store and disappeared, despite a widespread police search which also involved the Essex Police helicopter.

Investigating officer DC Dave Ford said the man was black, about 6ft tall, aged in his 20s and was of medium to large build. He was wearing a woollen patterned ski hat with tassels on each side, a grey waist length coat, dark blue jeans and blue and white deck shoes.
