Indoor Cricket: Horndon are a class apart

FOR the second week running, the three teams to bat first in the indoor youth cricket competition at Grays School emerged victorious. But even more remarkable was the batting performance of Horndon on the Hill, who scored 131 for the loss of two wickets against Orsett B, which was a repeat of their score seven days previously – and Daniel Stone scored 28 not out on both occasions. Callum Newton hit 30 not out and then followed up with two wickets for just 12 runs, aided by Samuel Smith who also took two wickets at a cost of just three runs, as Orsett B were dismissed for just 35.

Orsett A rattled up 114 for the loss of three wickets thanks to an undefeated 25 from Dylan Rose, while Alfie Buttle contributed 18 useful runs. In reply, Thurrock B responded with a creditable score of 86 for the loss of three wickets, leaving a deficit of just 18 runs, which turned out to be the closest game of the evening’s U12 competition.

Thurrock A also went past the century mark, scoring 122 for the loss of only one wicket, while their opponents Belhus B replied with 73 for the loss of two wickets. Shahmeer Qureshi top scored for Thurrock A with 27 not out while Jake Chegwidden and Joseph Surrey were also undefeated on 16 and 19 respectively. For Belhus B, Ciaran Gunning was their top scorer with 11 not out.

This week’s fixtures (Friday 18th November): 6pm – Orsett B v Thurrock B; 7pm – Horndon on the Hill v Belhus B; 8pm – Belhus A v Thurrock A.
