Police probe fire at homeless hostel

DOZENS of residents were led to safety from a homeless hostel in Grays after a fire broke out.

The fire took place at the Charles Street hostel in Charles Street at just after 4pm.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using one main jet by 4.30pm. All occupants of the flat were evacuated.

A high pressure fan was used to clear the property free of smoke. Crews dealt with the incident by 16:42hrs.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, ECFRS and the Police will carry out an investigation.
