AFC Hornchurch 2, Aveley 1
AVELEY gave a good account of themselves but the Urchins held on for victory to maintain their Ryman Premier third place.
The home side laboured through much of this derby but managed to take the lead on 24 minutes with a header from Martin Tuohy, his 13th league goal of the season and 16th in all.
A deflected 20-yard shot from Reiss Noel, his first goal for the club, made it 2-0 just after half-time and it looked as if Hornchurch might go on and win comfortably.
However, Lee Hodges’ Millers are made of sterner stuff and Aveley substitute Jake Cass, recently recruited from East Thurrock United, was introduced on the hour and he made an instant impression, scoring exactly ten seconds after play resumed.
That set up a nervy last half hour for the Urchins but in the end they held out.
