Campaign for more civil partnerships in Thurrock

ESSEX Euro MP Richard Howitt has teamed up with ex-Eastenders star Michael Cashman MEP, who as Albert Square’s Colin Russell took part in TV soaps’ first televised gay kiss in 1989, to call for an end to discrimination in marriage law in Britain.

Labour’s Richard Howitt MEP pledged to support the Equal Love campaign, which fights for equal marriage rights for all couples, whether gay or heterosexual, ending the twin bans on same-sex civil marriages and opposite-sex civil partnerships. So far over 2,000 people have signed a petition to the government encouraging them to end these bans.

Across Essex there were 136 civil partnerships conducted in 2010. But according to statistics, only three in Thurrock.

Richard Howitt MEP said:

“The last Labour government went a long way in eliminating discrimination by bringing forward civil partnership legislation; we must now go further and push for equal marriage rights for all couples.

“Last weekend David Cameron highlighted the UK’s heritage as a Christian country. I hope that Christian values of tolerance and love are applied to all couples who want to commit to one another – without prejudice.”

  1. So it’s a misleading headline? It’s a national campaign not a Thurrock based campaign? The stat about only three same sex marriages in Thurrock is pointless without the stat showing how many couples applied to marry in Thurrock. If it’s a case that, for example, ten couples wanted to get married but couldn’t due to some kind of restriction in place within Thurrock, that would be news but this isn’t. I would have thought that the reason the stat is only three is because only three same sex couples within Thurrock wanted to get married. Or am I missing something?

  2. They had a lovely lunch gazed out of the window of La Tasca over the lake and realised this was bigger than both of them. It’s nobody’s fault it’s just one of those wonderful things that happen between consenting human beings.
