Cricket: Strong batting wins it for Orsett

Orsett A and Horndon on the Hill, two of the three remaining unbeaten teams in the U14 indoor cricket competition, met on Friday evening. Orsett batted first and reached 119 for the loss of four wickets. Tom Haden scored 31 not out, Joe Mitchell scored 15 and Harry Lockyer contributed 18. In reply, Horndon were thwarted by the left arm spin of Lockyer, who conceded just six runs from three impressive overs, taking one wicket in the process. Horndon closed on 64 for the loss of five wickets despite fluid knocks by Sam Jeyes with 14 runs and Luke Smith who scored 13.

Orsett B also achieved a win by a similar margin. Batting first, they scored 129 for two wickets thanks to a fine undefeated 41 from Owen Edwards while Dylan Rose and Harry Hearn both contributed 26 not out. Their opponents, Belhus B, managed 78 for the loss of five wickets, for whom Braydon Scarlett scored 21 and Matthew Wakeling hit 12.

In the evening’s final match, Stanford le Hope retained their 100% record with an emphatic 83-run win over Belhus A. Five Stanford batsmen contributed scores of over 20, being Jack Carter and Ethan Thomas, both with 25 not out, Jonathan Edwards hit 26 not out, Callum McCarthy scored 20 not out and James Pearn made 21 not out. Belhus mustered 58-4 in reply through Mark Fogg’s 27 not out, while Eathan Morris contributed 18. For Stanford, Tom Willats and McCarthy picked up 1-7 and 1-18 respectively.

This week’s fixtures (Friday 10th February): 6pm – Thurrock A v Stanford le Hope; 7pm – Belhus A v Thurrock B; 8pm – Orsett B v Horndon on the Hill.
