ON SUNDAY, 19th February, Seitou Ryu Karate club hosted a seminar with Oxford Karate Instructor Kiyoshi Paul Coleman at The Gateway Academy in Tilbury, Essex. “Kiyoshi” is a karate title meaning “Teacher of teachers”, denoting someone with exceptional teaching skills with a proven record of taking students to senior levels and significant depth of knowledge and Paul Coleman is one of only a handful of instructors outside of Japan to be awarded the title by the Japan Karatedo Federation (JKF) Goju Kai. The day was split into two seminars: The first, geared towards all ages and grades was filled with students ranging from beginner to black belt attended the seminar where they were put through their paces with classical Goju Ryu Karate training exercises, as well as a few unique drills created by Kiyoshi Coleman himself. Students also got to experience his methods of bunkai (applications) for the beginner level kata (forms) “Gekisai Ichi” and “Gekisai Ni”.

The second seminar was for brown and black belts and Kiyoshi Coleman took things a higher level, teaching the Goju Ryu kata “Kurunrunfa” along with many of its practical applications for both kumite (sparring) and self defence. Students and instructors from other clubs as far a Colchester and South London were also in attendance.

Chief instructor of , Sensei Richard Hang Hong, a 4th Dan in karate who also holds the ranks of 3rd Dan in both Seiwakai and JKF Goju Kai said: “It’s such a privilege to have someone as skilled and knowledgable as Kiyoshi Coleman come to our club to teach. I spent a lot of time training with him at his dojo in Oxford where he helped me to prepare for my 3rd Dan tests in Japan last year. He has such a wealth of knowledge to share and the students all got something out of the seminar, even the ones who have only been training a very short amount of time who were worried it might be too much for them were instantly put at ease once the training began and afterwards they were quick to ask when he will next be coming to Essex. I’m looking forward to hosting another seminar with him at our club again this year.”
