Ockendon’s Tony aims to complete his first marathon in London next month

OCKENDON MAN, Tony Brown, is aiming to complete his first ever London Marathon on Sunday 22nd April along with around 40,000 other runners that complete the gruelling 26.2 mile course every year.

Tony will be hoping to complete the course whilst aiming to raise a huge amount for his chosen charity, CHILDREN with CANCER UK. The charity was founded in the 1980’s by the O’Gorman family following the double tragedy of losing 2 of their children to childhood cancer. Since the charity was founded, it has continued to grow and now raises much needed funds into the research of childhood cancers and also provides support to sufferers and their family and friends. The charity is completely self-funded and receives no government funding which means that it relies fully on volunteers and fundraisers such as Tony.

Tony has decided to run in aid of CHILDREN with CANCER UK for his own personal reasons. When questioned about his reasoning behind running for his chosen charity, his response was “My lifetime achievement has always been to run a London Marathon and I thought that there would be no greater achievement then to raise a huge amount for a charity whilst completing this world famous event. Unfortunately cancer is becoming a more common occurrence for all of us and we are all affected by it in some way, either directly or indirectly. I have recently been affected by family members being diagnosed and friends losing their personal battle with cancer. Therefore I decided that I would run for a charity associated with cancer and CHILDREN with CANCER UK stuck out because of their work with children.

Tony is currently busy with his hectic training schedule and he is currently pounding the pavements 5 days per week. However he has still managed to find time to already raise a substantial amount
towards his fundraising target of £2,500.00.

He recently organised a ‘Charity Raffle and Race Night’ in association with his local pub The Archer, South Ockendon which raised £968.80.

He is planning a number of other events including a bake sale at his workplace in Central London where he works as a Billing Controller for a Marketing and Advertising company and he has also setup an online fundraising page where he has received a large number of donations from friends and family. This will be a huge achievement for Tony, who only started taking his running seriously a year ago to try and improve his fitness and help his weight control, since he started running he has lost over 2 Stone in weight.
