Corringham shoppers praised at first Foodbank collection

SHOPPERS in Corringham donated a generous 765kg of food to Thurrock foodbank on Saturday (17th March) to help feed local people facing crisis. A small group of volunteers gave up their time to make the supermarket collection outside Morrisons such a success.

Emma Biddle, food donations coordinator for Thurrock foodbank, said:
“We had a brilliant collection at Morrisons in Corringham, the atmosphere was great and the shoppers really got behind us and showed their support by donating an amazing amount of food. Thank you to everyone who helped us.”

Thurrock foodbank aims to open in summer 2012 and all food given out will be donated by the public, which makes collections like Saturday’s so important. The next foodbank collection is at Sainsbury’s in Chafford Hundred on Saturday 21st April, which will continue to add to the opening stock.

Thurrock foodbank project manager, Victoria Windus, says;
“This was a fantastic start to our food collections and we were all overwhelmed by the generosity of the Morrisons shoppers. The food just seemed to keep coming! Although we expect people to add just one extra item to their shop, some shoppers brought us one or more bags full of food and many expressed their support for the foodbank. We also raised almost £100 from cash donations made on the day.”

If readers would like to find out more about Thurrock foodbank, there is a supporters’ meeting on Wednesday 4th April at 8pm at Socketts Heath Baptist Church hall.
