Lakeside Shopping Centre is funding ‘Sweet Love’, a theatre tour for schools, in the Thurrock district to raise awareness of the issue of sexual bullying. The funding will enable Futures Theatre Company to deliver a series of productions and workshops to more than 1,000 students (and an INSET for teachers) at local schools including The Grays School & Media Arts College, Ormiston Park Academy and The Ockendon Academy.
Additional funding from the Arts Council England has also made it possible for Futures Theatre Company – in partnership with local Theatre Company Impetuous Kinship – to deliver the performances and workshops completely free of charge to year eight, nine and ten students in schools in Thurrock. These will help young people develop strategies to tackle sexual bullying.
Paul Lancaster, General Manager at Lakeside, comments: “We’re proud to be supporting the work of Futures Theatre Company and enabling ‘Sweet Love’ to come to the region. The schools in the area are already doing a great job but forum theatre productions like this one can tackle the big issues in a creative way and help us raise even more awareness to prevent sexual bullying.
“We hope that our support of this production will enable young people to feel empowered to live their lives without fear as a result of greater understanding.”
The local schools tour will take place between March and May 2012, and it is estimated that a total of ten schools will be involved.
