Uninsured vehicles seized by police during campaign

TWO uninsured vehicles were seized at Thurrock on Friday March 23 during a road safety operation led by Essex Police’s commercial vehicle unit.

The vehicles were stopped as part of Operation Mermaid , the national campaign to rid the roads of unsafe or dangerously-driven commercial vehicles.

A total of 27 lorries and vans were intercepted on the M25 and A13 and taken to a check site at Moto services where police officers examined driver details and investigated their loads.

Four vehicles were found to be overweight including a loaded tipper lorry found to be 80 per cent over its maximum weight.

Eight drivers were investigated for a total of 53 driving hours infringements ranging from taking no daily rest to driving for too long in a 24 hour period.

A total of £2,560 was collected in penalty notices.
