Olympics: Bunting and funding gathers pace

THREE dozen Thurrock organisations and groups have been granted funds between £75 and £2,000 to help Celebrate Thurrock in 2012.

And over 90 have applied to get Thurrock Council’s bunting kit for the summer of celebration.

It was in January that the council announced a £20,000 funding stream — from Local Public Service Agreements reward money and the council’s Olympic funding — to share with local organisations and local people

Organisations such as ngage, schools, forums and individual streets, made bids for funding. The council worked in co-operation with the Thurrock Council for Voluntary Services which also provided some grants to several of the organisations.

The requests were to help organise street parties, a fete, Olympic fun days, a variety day, a party in the park and other community events.

Thurrock Council has also put together a simple guide for people who want to celebrate safely, a one-stop-shop for dealing with all the bureaucratic details that are necessary for street closures, insurance and so on.

It is available online via the council’s website ( and clicking on the Celebrate Thurrock icon.

  1. Can anyone tell me if its true that all the people who are making the 100mtrs of bunting requested by Thurrock Council, will be expected to hold it up by their hands!?
