Jobs woe as dozens of Thurrock jobs go at Thermalite

HANSON Building Products has announced a proposal to cease production at its Thermalite concrete block works at Motherwell Way, West Thurrock and, for the time being, operate the site as a depot.

It follows a strategic review of the Thermalite business, which concluded that future production requirements could be met from two manufacturing sites. Hanson currently operates three sites – West Thurrock, Hams Hall in Birmingham and Newbury, Oxfordshire.

There are currently 65 people employed at West Thurrock along with six drivers. Hanson proposes to cease production on June 29, 2012 and reduce the workforce to four people to run a depot operation, along with two drivers, while future options are assessed.

All affected employees have been notified and consultation with the workforce has begun.

Jim Claydon, managing director of Hanson Building Products said: “These are difficult times for the construction industry. It is important that we operate the business at maximum efficiency. I appreciate that the proposal will cause uncertainty and concern, but it is critical to the long term future of the Thermalite business.”
