Sign up to celebrate in 2012

OLYMPIC Games organisers are on the lookout for Local Leaders who are keen to play an active role in their friendship group, street or community in celebrating this summer.

Two of them are Lesley (Monty) Kirby and Terry Mead who met up at the Community House in Seabrooke Rise, Grays on Thursday (12 April).

Terry is Group Scout Leader, Thameside Sea Scouts, Thurrock District and Monty was Thurrock’s 2009 Citizen of the Year and is manager of the Community House.

Monty said: “We’ve got a summer of fun planned at Seabrooke Rise and we’re really looking forward to it all.

“Not only have we got three of the council’s 100m of bunting kits for our various groups here, we’re having a street party on the Diamond Jubilee Tuesday, having our own ‘torch relay’ and we’re planning a fortnight of daily sport-related activities throughout the Olympics — Olympics Are Us!”

She added that fundraising was going well, with help from Thurrock Council Essex Legacy.

And Terry said: “Sea Scouts, Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies come into their own when we are celebrating.

“This year with the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and especially the Torch Relay coming through Grays is a really special one; one to remember, a once-in-a-lifetime experience for us all.”

He added: “I signed up as a Local Leader to encourage members of Thurrock District Scouts to take part in fun activities and events in the build-up to, and during the Lining of the Streets event.

“We will then Be Prepared to line the route for the Torch Relay in Grays on Friday, 6 July.”

Both Terry and Monty said the Local Leader scheme provided them with ideas of events and ways of getting others involved in celebrating and encouraged iothers to join up.

Seb Coe, chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), said: “Local Leaders are brilliant organisers in every community around the country and play an active role in celebrating national events at a local level.

“Through this programme Local Leaders will help provide opportunities for everyone around the UK to join in with the London 2012 Games.”

Thurrock Council held four Torch Relay question-and-answer sessions at the Thameside Theatre in the days either side of Easter for local people and businesses to find out more about what was going on, and how they could help or enjoy the event.
