Athletics: Young harriers run free at first track meet of the season

Sunday 29th April was the first meeting of the Eastern Young Athletics league hosted at Watford. Thurrock Harriers faced their first battle which was travelling through the torrential rains and ended up competing for most of the day in it.

Yinka Sudipo was first to race 100m coming in third in a time of 13.7. Also coming in third was Kammi Peter in a time of 15.1. Tom Wakeland came in first for the U13 in a time of 16.1 and Toyin Olufemi competed in the U17 in a time of 14.3. Alice Martin coming back after injury clocked up a seasons best performance with 16.0. Shannon Coomes ran a good race in a time of 16.2 for the U13. Running with a calf injury Lily Jewell still managed to put in a seasons best performance with 14.4.

Running 200m was Jack Farmer, putting in a personal best time of 23.9 quickly followed by Yinka Sudipo in a time of 28.3. Kammi Peter running again put in a time of 31.7 and she was followed by Damilola Alabebe in 32.3. Shannon Coomes ran the 200m in 32.0.

Kicking off the 300m Aidan Simpson clocked up a personal best with a time of 45.4 and not to be out done Elle Smith matched Aidan with a pb in a time of 49.2.

The 800m proved difficult in the conditions but still the Harriers produced some good performances. Jody Meredith ran a fantastic 2:16.0 which was a pb, followed by Tyler Chu who ran just outside his personal best with a time of 2:35.3. Jack Exley and Daniel Knott both ran 800m for the U13B and came in in 2:45.5 and 3:17.8 respectively. Elle Smith produced a fantastic run in the conditions to put in a new pb 2:32.6 and Chaima-Sarah Allali came in 1st place 2:37.3. Elena March ran her 800m in 2:51.3 and Bethany March completed in 3:28.2.

The only Harrier to compete in the 1500m did so in fine style coming in 3rd place. Samuel Smith ran a fantastic race in the rain with a personal best time of 5:15.4.

Kicking off the hurdles races was no problem for Tom Wakeling and Liam Barnard came in 1st place (U13B 75H)for the A and B stream respectively with times of 13.3 for Tom which was a pb and 18.6 for Liam. In the 75H Alyssa Sumun came in 3rd place with a time of 14.5 and Beth James ran a time of 14.1.
Jamie Kensey wowed with a pb in High Jump of 1.65 along with Aidan Simpson who jumped 1.55 for a pb. James Pearson came in 1st for the B stream with a jump of 1.40 and Tom Wakeling jumped 1.25 for the U13B. Liam Barnard jumped a pb of 1.20 for the B stream.

Long jump provided some good results and was kicked off by Jamie Kensey who came in 1st place with a jump 5.79m. Jack Farmer also came in 1st place with a seasons best performance with 5.27m. Yinka Sudipo came in 1st place with a jump of 4.32 and Charlie Splarn jumped a respectable 3.85m. Yet again Liam Barnard produced another fine performance with a personal best of 3.77 to win. Toyin Olufemi jumped a seasons best of 3.83 and Beth James jumped 4.24m.

Thurrock’s relay teams produced some exciting performances. The U15B team came in 1st place with a storming time of 54.5. The U13G not to be out done also won in a time of 59.9. The U15G completed in a time of 59.2 and the U13G came in 2nd with a time of 61.5.

Given the conditions of the day team coaches Gerry Heapy and Karl Sumun were very pleased with their teams performance and are looking forward to a fantastic season.
