Horndon’s second eleven got their SNEL league campaign off to a winning start against league newcomers Harlow Town in a low scoring match at the Recreation Ground on Saturday.
Batting first Harlow got off to a solid start seeing off the opening bowlers of Mark Wills and Ryan Cutts before Matt Hurley was bowled by Tom Moseley with the score on 84. Fellow opener Jason Gladwin followed shortly after being bowled by Bradley Mason one short of his 50. From then on the combination of left arm off spin of Moseley from one end and the leg spin of Bradley Mason from the other took control. Wickets continued to fall at a regular rate and Harlow were eventually dismissed for 158 with Bradley Mason finishing with figures of 6-44 and Moseley 4-54.
In reply Horndon got off to a flying start with openers Dave Stitson and Terry Hurrell sharing a 101 partnership before Hurrell was dismissed for 40. Stitson followed shortly after making 56 from 56 balls. With both openers back in the pavilion wickets began to tumble and Horndon found themselves eight wickets down with fourteen runs needed for victory. However Lewis Crooks and Mark Wills saw Horndon home for a two wicket victory.
