Cricket: Orsett outlclassed by Harlow middle order

Harlow 1st v Orsett 1st

Orsett batted first on Saturday and with a couple of enforced changes had a new opening partnership in Lewis Lockyer who has been in fantastic form in the second string opening with Phil Landman. With hopes high, Landman fell to only his second ball to Akachwata. Lockyer was joined by C Withanage but found this tough going and fell for 0 after trying a big hook shot off A McGarry. With the score at 24 for after Ahmed fell for just 4. Wathanage and Phil Keeping tried to restore some balance. The pair put on 71 until Wathanage fell for 56 and Keeping 30 runs later for 29. With the score at 125 for 5, Moon 53, Skipper Kevin Sargent 62 not out and Shahid Khan who hit 38 off just 20 balls managed to rebuild the Orsett innings to a respectable 284 for 7 off 50 overs.

Harlow got off to a shaky start with 2 early wickets falling from the bowling of G Pavitt and S Khan, with the innings at 44 for 3 it was the batting of U Jan with 93 and the impressive A Khawaja with an unbeated 110 that took the game away for the borough side. The home team winning the game comfortably with 8 overs to spare. Skipper Sargent, we lost a few early wickets which really slowed us down and although 284 seems a good score the batting track was hard and flat. The two Harlow players batted well and took the game away from us.

Hutton under 16 v Orsett Under 16

On Sunday Hutton hosted a Matchplay under 16 game against Orsett with the borough side entering the competition for the first time in many years.
Orsett skipper S Plom won the toss and inserted the home side on a very hot Sunday afternoon.

Openers Kirk and G Smith bowled well with Smith taking an early wicket. Hutton”s W Spires batting at three was soon to be the pivotal player in this game.
With wickets falling over the next 30 plus overs Spires sent the ball to all parts of the ground scoring 128 not out out of a total score of 266. Orsett stuck to the task in hand and worked hard in the heat with Jack Plom 2 for 68, Joe Mitchell 1 for 28 off 8 and Jordan Warren with 3 for 53 off 8 overs.

Chasing 266 was always going to be a big ask for Orsett and with Rydings and Warren being removed by the openers it proved too much as wickets fell.

The pick of the bowlers was J Bough who finished with figures of 5 for 26 off 7.5 overs. Orsett were bowled out for 79 crashing to a big defeat. Orsett team manager Jason Plom said: “Hutton were a very good side and have every chance to progress in this competition. They had a couple of good players who have 1st team experience already. We know we have a very young side this year but are building for the future and know we can come back stronger in our next game.

Orsett entertain Saffron Walden on bank holiday Monday from 1pm.
