Cricket: O’Neill wins it for Thurrock

The Jubilee weekend saw a first defeat for a Thurrock league team with the second eleven losing to Havering Atte Bower at Blackshots.

The 1st and 3rd teams however continued their fine winning streaks with victories in the T Rippon Mid Essex League and remain unbeaten so far this season.

Saturday 2nd June

The 1st XI visited Rankins near Rochford and the home side batted first. They posted 158 all out with Sutherby (31) top scoring for the hosts. There were two wickets apiece for Andrew Hills, Matt Hills and Robert Neal with the pick of the attack being Jordan Warren who returned 4-19 off of his 7 overs. In reply Chris Buckley (26) and Mark O’Neill put on 71 for the first wicket.

Skipper O’Neill following an unbeaten century the previous Sunday continued his recent good form batting through the innings to secure a seven wicket victory with 79 not out. Cousen picked up all three Thurrock wickets to fall finishing with 3-43 for Rankins.

The 2nd XI entertained Havering Atte Bower at Blackshots. The home side won the toss and elected to bat first but were bowled out for just 109. Only Kevin Birch (31) and Ernie Extra (30) made noteworthy contributions to the total. There were four wickets each for Roe and Houghton off of their 12 over allocations seeing them finish with 4-28 and 4-38 respectively. In the reply Tim Bland was bowled early on by skipper Paul Gelder giving Thurrock some hope but then Gentle (38*) and Keylock (51) pretty much saw the visitors home. Keylock was bowled by Tom Hills with Havering requiring just 2 runs for victory and they ran out comfortable winners by 8 wickets.

The 3rd XI travelled to Beaulieu Park near Chelmsford to play Wickham CC 2nd XI. The home side batted first and apart from Hughes and Reuter who both made 43 there were no other real contributions and they were bowled out for just 138. Michael Parker took 3-41 with the new ball and then it was down to the spin pairing of Alex McLellan and Wayne Simmons again. McLellan had 4-42 off of his 10 overs and Simmons finished with 3-26 off 8.2 overs. The total never really posed a problem as Thurrock skipper Jordan Owen blasted his way to 79 not out with support from Danny Groves (23) and Dean Wright (25*) and a nine wicket victory was achieved in just the 21st over.
