Simon Chikumbindi, 39, of Calcutta Road, Tilbury, appeared before Basildon Magistrates on Thursday (7 June) charged with three offences of benefit fraud.
Magistrates were told he had failed to declare he was employed while claiming to be a student and had been paid nearly £14,000 in Housing and Council Tax Benefit.
Chikumbindi admitted the offences and was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £775 costs.
In addition, he will also have to repay all the overpaid benefit to Thurrock Council.
I feel that if somebody goes out to defraud the TBC or any other agencies then I think, that the punishment should fit the crime, because if the law doesnt start to show these liars and cheats, that we dont want how money going to people who shouldnt have it, then this type of fraud will go on, and it looks like another emigrant from another country, feeels that ok to cheat the system, and the sentance of 12 weeks is a laugh, it doesnt do anything to deter other would be fraudsters, and then to suspend the sentence for 1 year, tells other people to carry on defrauding the system, we should get rid of the graany state before this country becomes bankrupt, because of all these illegal emigrants coming into the country and we cant rid of them, because of their human rights, what about our human rights, we the people who have paid our way, our taxes and our national health stamps every week without fail, we have to go through a, means test to get any help from the social services, I am a old age pensioner, and I am still paying tax on my pension, and because I was silly enough to obtain a small secondary pension, to help with small things in my retirement, I get penalised, because I am £5 over the set amount, but these people come into this country and dont pay anything towards there keep, they are on the take from the time they arrive in this country, we couldnt go to there country and get help with living straight away, and when they claim that they will be killed if they return to there own country, what does that say about there country and them, what crimes have they commited in there own country, what I say is send them back home before, they take this wonderful country to the cleaners, because to half of them defrauding the system is second nature to them.
I agree danny, as a country we are a ‘soft touch’, the courts need to man up, these types have pretty much ruined Thurrock, as i understand manyt have been gifted large sums of money to be housed here, so what else do we expect.
Its laughable that he has probably travelled thousand’s of miles to settle here, then claims to be a student, all this and he is 39.
Surprised he didn’t turn out to be an ‘illegal’, when are we going to vet these people, if we want to emigrate there are many countries that need to see a skill and the ability to keep yourself, not just till you get down the ‘dole office’ for a handout but for many years.
I agree make the punishment fit the crime, this kind of fraud is against the crown and should be treated as such, assume that any wealth has been gained by fraudulant acts and send them home is a start, however he would more than likely be back within a few weeks with a new identity.
I feel that anyone who commits this type of fraud should be given the punishment to fit the crime.
Until such time that a Government with any spine tackles the immigration and benefit system in this country then we will continue to see this type of problem.
As has been said, the UK is seen as a soft touch for any person wishing to come to our shores and claim every single benefit that is going, our immigration checks are lacking and even when an illegal is found they are let out with a date to return to the office, and yep you guessed it, they never turn up.
The UK is a joke and people are too afraid to voice their opinions regarding the subject of immigration and deportation for fear of being branded a racist, the Political Correct brigade and the EU have forced the UK to adopt a very softly softly aproach even though the rest of Europe seem to have more stringent rules.
Each successive government that has come to office has said that they would tackle the issues but have done absolutley nothing once they get into power, they are all spinless hypoctites that doff their hats at the EU and allow outside interference in running the country.
If I walked into a bank and stole £14,000 i’d be banged up for years. Yet here is an immigrant who has effectively robbed us all of £14,000 and he doesn’t go to prison or isn’t even deported, even though he’s probably here illegally because he was working whilst entering the country on a student visa I am presuming. I agree strongly in part with your post, your political jibe spoils what was a good post, all politicians are the same mate, they are not in for us, but feathering their own nests.
It is time the judicial system is changed, not with goverrnment policy, but LAW changes that remove these scummy types from our shores. As I explained assume any wealth is by illegal means, confiscate all wealth and send them packing, it will send out a stern message.
ALL MP’s need to get / give the British Isles back to the English, Irish, Welsh and Scots, not all those that claim to be British because once upon a time they were a commonwealth country, as you know anyone can be British and many use this as a means to an end.
When someone is caught defrauding the benefits system, they should be banned from claiming benefits until all the money they claim is paid back. Their names and details should be passed on to every local authority in the country and the DWP. At least that way they shouldn’t be able to do it again.

Another LAW change needed and quick before they bleed us dry.
This would curb immigration big time, I doubt the fraudsters amongst them would be keen to board a plane if there was no loopholes for them to crawl into.
My point being The Labour party deliberately introduced a policy of mass immigration. Their advisers admitted they did this. Senior members of the government publicly stated they wouldn’t care if the population of Britain hit 70 million. None of this was put in any of their election manifesto’s because they knew they would never get elected if they did tell people what they intended to do. In other words they blatantly lied to the British public.
They trebled the national debt. They created hundreds of thousands of public sector jobs and introduced laws to ensure the public sector had to take on ethnic minorities. They introduced anti racism laws that effectively mean that people are banned from saying what they want to because it is now a criminal offence. Public expenditure went from 360 billion in 2001 to close to 800 billion now. The largest areas of increase are health welfare and education. Where is the proof that these public services have got better?
We now have millions of government subsidised jobs in the private sector. Subsidised through benefits. Youth unemployment went up by 40%v under the Labour government. Virtually no ordinary person on an average wage can afford to buy their own home. Immigration outstrips house building by over 300%. Wages have plummeted in the construction industry because of cheap foreign labour. The Labour party have called unemployed British people workshy and badly educated and that is why they can’t get a job.
Most importantly of course, there are no school places on Chafford. All this happened under the last Labour government coincidentally at the same time they introduced a policy of mass immigration.
From what I understand, the prime responsibility of a government is to govern in the national interest of Britain and the British people. In no way can any of the above be construed to be a government governing in the national interest of Britain and the British people. We were told a pack of lies and told to lump it.
The Labour party scream from the rooftops that parties like the BNP should be banned from entering elections in this country because of their views. I personally think the Labour party should be banned from entering elections in this country until they can give the people of this country a guarantee that they will govern in the national interests of Britain and the British people and not the entire rest of the world to the detriment of this country and it’s people. If they can’t guarantee that there actions will match their words then they should not be allowed to participate.
They totally screwed the country last time. They shouldn’t be allowed to do the same again. Let us not forget that when we talk about migrant count we are talking about people that are required to have a visa to stay in this country and not European citizens. The next time people moan about not being able to find a job, think about these figures and ask yourself whether you think the Last Labour government governed in your interest. And we still can’t kick out foreign criminals, even if they threaten to blow up the country.
