New hotel set for Lakeside

OWNERS of Lakeside Shopping Centre, Capital Shopping Centres (CSC), has submitted planning proposals for a £5million hotel close to the shopping centre with views over Alexandra Lake.

This new venture, to be operated by Travelodge, will feature more than eighty rooms providing an ideal base for leisure and business travellers and reflecting the Lakeside Basin’s transformation into a new regional town centre. The development will also contain a restaurant offer, complementing the existing catering line up at The Boardwalk. The hotel will create 57 construction jobs and will offer a further 46 permanent jobs once the building is complete.

These proposals add to those already outlined as part of a £180m expansion of the centre’s retail offer that would see the arrival of 30-40 new stores and a substantial investment in local community infrastructure.

Representing an important part of Thurrock Council’s strategic plans for the development of the area, the creation of the hotel directly complements and supports emerging proposals for the development of an exciting leisure destination at Lakeside Shopping Centre.

Discussing the potential benefits of the new hotel, Lakeside General Manager, Paul Lancaster, said: “These proposals form an integral part of the next phase of investment here at Lakeside. It is our aim that this new hotel will be an important step towards the creation of an exciting new leisure destination that will cement Lakeside’s status as one of the most popular shopping centres in the country.

“We already employ 6,000 people and support 9,000 jobs in total, making us one of the biggest employers in the area. Our current proposals for an exciting new retail scheme will provide 1,100 jobs during construction and 2,600 once it is completed. It will also indirectly support a further 700 jobs in the area.

“Our shoppers and the local community have highlighted the need for Lakeside to grow and develop in this way and we are excited to be taking steps towards achieving this.”

Commenting on the plans, Tony O’Brien, Travelodge UK development director, said: “Capital Shopping Centres expansion plans for Lakeside are substantial and we are delighted that they have chosen Travelodge to be the hotel occupier that complements their offer.

“Lakeside attracts over 26 million visitors a year and south Essex is home to a large number of businesses. Combined, these two factors mean that the location is perfect for a Travelodge hotel.

“We are delighted to be opening this new hotel at Lakeside. By offering affordable accommodation, we are making Thurrock and Essex more accessible to a wide range of business and leisure customers.

“We will provide a direct boost to the local economy of £904,489 per annum. As our research shows the average Travelodge customer will spend on average £36 a day in local shops, restaurants and bars during their stay.”

Subject to planning, the hotel could open as soon as 2014.
