TWO LABOUR councillors are under fire for not supporting a motion to send congratulations to the Queen.

Aveley councillor and former mayor, cllr Maureen Pearce had proposed a motion which would see a letter of congratulations sent to Queen Elizabeth 2 on her diamond jubilee.

But Labour councillors, Martin Healy and Phil Smith failed to support the motion.

Defending his actions, Irishman cllr Healy said: “I have nothing against the queen but quite simply, I am not a royalist.

“If this has upset the local Tories then good. They have upset plenty of people with their support for a the disastrous handling of the economy which sees thousands of Thurrock residents struggling.”

The motion was passed.

  1. Not only is Cllr Healy not a Royalist but looking at his comment regarding the handling of the Economy he is also showing signs of amnesia, seems to be the typical Labour Party mantra nowadays, rather than lest we forget it is now lets we forget………

I think it is highly disrespectful by a party member to vote against a simple congratulation to Her Majesty, blimey even Martin McGuinness held out his hand with an olive branch, Cllr Healy should hang his head in shame.

Just perhaps if we look a little closer at this it shows, that labour Councillors have an opinion of theire own.
Unlike the Conservatives that are whipped in to everything they say & do.
I happen to be a very strong rolyalist & love everything about them, yet we are not all the same.

  3. sallyb, it seems very sad that Cllr Healy takes this attitude just to put one over on the local tories! I have followed his comments in the local press over the years and to me its just non stop anti tory remarks, sometimes I think just for the sake of it!

  4. Here’s a no brainer for you, why don’t all the Tories in Thurrock use their inventiveness and send Queenie a card all by their self or does that take too much brain power.

I do hear what you say,& like I said I’m a royalist , I do think thought that Councillor Healy is just doing what he believes in, I don’t know the man yet as said we all have our own opinions & minds .

  6. Sallb please don’t get me started, I think we can safely assume most male members and possibly some female members of the Thurrock Tory group indeed enjoy a good whipping. Especially outside of work time that’s their trouble.

  7. Oh behave you lot!

Maybe some Tories did send “Queenie” a card. All Tories decided, when asked, they supported the idea of the authority sending her a letter. I’m not sure whipping comes into it.

I love the way Sallyb seems to be able to turn absolutely everything into an anti-Tory message! Tories support congratulating the Queen (like almost everyone in the country)… certain Labour councillors do not (positive view: have own opinions. negative view: doesn’t reflect views of residents)… Sallyb says: Tories are just sheep.

You do make me giggle 🙂

  8. Cllr Maureen Pearce not only praised the Queen but noted recent Royal visits to Thurrock, making mention of the “gracious” visit of the Duchess of Cornwall. If Cllr Pearce had confined her motion to the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, I would have no problem with it. However when Cllr Pearce asks the Council, on behalf of the people of Thurrock to “affirm our loyalty and support for the Royal Family” I suspect that I am not alone when I say that “loyalty” is an attribute that both Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall have forfeited. I refer to their adultress affair which continued even after Prince Charles married Diana. Such conduct, especially by the heir to the throne, is not deserving of loyalty from others. Regarding Cllrs Healey and Smith, whilst they are entitled to their own views, if people are upset by their anti-royalism then maybe they should express their disapproval at the ballot box.

  9. Correction to my comment. “their adultress affair” should read “their adulterous affair”.

  10. If Cllr Healy had said I wont support Cllr Pearce’s motion congratulating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, because I am an anti royalist, fair enough, that’s his belief. But to basically say that its because he can put one over on the local Tories is sad!

Everybody has got the right and freedom to do what they wish to do. Which I think you explained rather well in the first part of your blog, I’m in total agreement.
But in regard to the rest of your comment I’ve never seen Phil Anderson in any comment he’s made where he has not tried to make political points in any matter. So what can we say their all as bad as each other but surely that is what local politics are all about and when there’s nothing on the TV it gives us all something to laugh at. So I hope we can laugh at them and not with them.

  12. Oh Ben
    You do make me laugh.
Unfortunately you have totally misread me.
I’m actually not a Tory hatter in fact I the last election I voted for dear old Eddie Harriman .i just get so frustrated that these councillors allow them self to be used and manipulated( well forgett about the whipping, I apologise I’ve been reading all about MR Grey) still never the less you have to admit councillor Pearce was only really out for self gratification. On one more note I totally agrea with Mr Perrin, well said Sir

  13. Cllr Healy is entitled to his own view but his talk of the economy etc has nothing to do with what Cllr Pearce was talking about by bringing up this idea. He should have just said that he is a not a royalist and left it at that.

Personally this is the type of idea that all political groups should be supporting. Unfortunately it is such over the top actions which make people think that the Labour party are ashamed to be British. You never hear them championing anything remotely British both locally or nationally.

I don’t think asking all councillors to allow a congratulations to be sent to the Queen on behalf of Thurrock was done for any form of self-gratification at all.

  14. What do we want from our politicians?

Would we want Mr Healy to be a hypocrite and vote for the motion when he clearly has other views?
