Housing benefit cheat fined

STEVEN Singh, 29, of Clayburn Gardens, South Ockendon, appeared before Basildon Magistrates on Thursday (18 June) charged with three offences of benefit fraud.

Magistrates were told he had been allocated a council property in Clayburn Gardens, South Ockendon and sub-let it and was living in North London. He had also failed to declare his income from his tenant.

Singh admitted the offences and was sentenced to a Community Order of 12 months. He was also ordered to do 140 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £150 costs.

In addition, he will also have to repay all the overpaid benefit to Thurrock Council.

  1. That’ll teach them. Bet he’ll never do that again. Another local lad I see. How the hell did he get a place off the council. A soldier that get’s blown up in Afghanistan gets told by the council he and his family will have to wait seven years or more to be moved from his high rise flat into a house. The paragon of virtue above has probably rocked up in Thurrock from another council place in London, which he’s probably subletting as well, and gets offered a place to live. I can only assume the soldier was of the wrong ethnic mix and didn’t vote the right way.
