Athletics: Boys relay rally at Essex champs

The Essex Relay Championships were held at Woodford Green on Friday 13th July. In the driving wind and rain the teams from Thurrock Harriers battled and came away with medals and pb’s leaving head coach Gerry Heapy very happy.

The U17 mens relay blasted round the track in an impressive 49.6 seconds, not a pb but was enough to get them silver.

The U13 girls relay team astounded everyone with a fantastic run which included great baton changes and good solid runs by every member of the team with a personal best time of 55.6secs.

The U13 boys team came in 5th place with a time of 56.6secs and the U15 boys 4th with a time of 56.6secs.

The U15 girls were struck by the Friday 13th curse and didn’t finish but are ready to show everyone how its done at the next track meet.

The 800m relay was very exciting with the U13G finishing in 4th and the final race of the evening was for the U15 boys medley relay which consisted of 800m, 300m, 300m, 200m. This was probably the most challenging race of the evening with the rain lashing down Tyler Chu ran a very impressive 1st lap in the 800m, however an injury he had sustained earlier in the day made every step of the 2nd lap extremely painful.

He passed the baton over then collapsed and the rest of the team pushed on to finish in 4th place. Tyler is now using crutches and will not be training or competing in the immediate future.

The conditions were far from perfect but the team spirit which Thurrock Harriers has was there for all to see in abundance.
