Olympic legacy: How to join Thurrock Judo Club

AS PART of our journey round the sports clubs of the borough, we travelled to North Road, Purfleet and into the Hugh Delargy Hall.

The hall is the home of Thurrock Judo Club. This reporter spent the first ten minutes looking at the posters from tournaments all over the world that representatives from the club had participated in.

The club has been the life’s work of John and Sharon Cottis. Sharon was an official at the Olympic Games and has seen athletes such as silver medallist, Gemma Gibbons come through.

The dedication of the athletes and the coaches is tremendous.

It would be nice if our next generation of aspiring judo olympians actually had a changing room. We hope that the councils’ sports development officers and councillors are looking in and may be able to help.

YT spoke to Sharon about the club, their achievements and the hopes for the future.

For further details on the club, e-mail johnjscjudoclub@aol.com.
