Massive fire at East Tilbury scrapyard

FIRE CREWS spent most of the night fighting a fire in an East Tilbury scrap yard.

Firefighters used one hose reel and one jet to tackle a blaze involving a number of lorries.

ECFRS’ Control Operators received a number of calls to the blaze, including reports of minor explosions.

At 01:57 hrs, crews confirmed that the incident involved three lorries – one articulated lorry trailer unit, one 7.5 tonne lorry and a flat bed lorry – along with a quantity of scrap.

The incident commander had requested the attendance of the Electricity Board to isolate supply to the site, as the power was hampering firefighting operations. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two jets and two hose reels to tackle flames, along with foam.

Initially it was thought that cylinders may be involved in the incident, but this had not been confirmed.

A joint Police and Fire Service investigation will begin to establish the cause of the blaze, once the fire has been extinguished.

The fire was extinguished by 02:41 hrs and crews left the scene at 03:57 hrs. A revisit is planned for 08:30 hrs to check that the area remains safe.
