Council call time on Morrison housing contract

ALMOST A YEAR AGO, council boss Graham Farrant told housing repairs giant, Morrison, to “shape up or ship out.”

On Wednesday night at a meeting of the the council cabinet, portfolio holder, cllr Val Morris-Cook issued a statement that the council would not be “taking up the option of extending the contract beyond August 2015.

Cllr Morris-Cook told cabinet that the contract, signed in August 2010, gave the council an option of extending to August 2025 but it appeared that because of all the issues surrounding delivery and performance, this would not occur.

Cllr Morris-Cook made several references to the possible legal challenges making such a decision and castigated the whole history of the contract.

She said: “There are many lessons to learn here. Many mistakes made in tendering and not focussing on local businesses.

A statement from Morrison will follow.

  1. So only another three years of Morrisons. They continue with their original five year contract. If they have failed to deliver why can’t Morrison’s be sacked and the contract be ripped up rather than let them continue for another three years?

And was this a Cabinet decision and have the Labour Cabinet predetermined any decision on any future contract awards if Morrisons submit future bids for Council contracts?
