Swimming: William Edwards make the biggest splash

SUNDAY saw the first of this year’s major Secondary Schools sporting events as Blackshots pool and Thurrock Swimming club hosted the annual borough swimming gala.

In a slightly different format from previous years and one that would be more inclusive, encouraging more students to participate, Blackshots pool was buzzing as the Thurrock Schools such as St. Clere’s, Hassenbrook, William Edwards and The Grays Convent took the plunge.

Years 7 were the first to go followed by Year 8, Year 9 and then Years 10/11 were combined. In each age category there were individual 25m sprint races in each of the 4 disciplines followed by the rapid 4X25m freestyle relays. The competition ended with the hugely exciting4X25m Medley relays.

Faced with some tough competition and some very talented swimmers from our local rivals, students from the William Edwards School did what they do best and embraced the moment and rose to the occasion.

Results saw William Edwards take the crown and win overall wining both the boys and girls competition.

After the presentation of medals and trophies, Mr Reid, Head of PE commented on the gala. “It was great to see so many students of all ages and abilities get involved today . Thurrock Swimming Club have down a great job in organising this event and special thanks needs to go to all of their members and volunteers that gave up their time freely today to ensure that it went smoothly. Well done to all that were involved.”
